Classification Of Sports Injuries And Their Treatment

Classification Of Sports Injuries And Their Treatment

Are you suffering from a sports injury and looking for its treatment? You’re at the right place as here, we will discuss the classification of sports injuries and possible treatment options.

Before starting, here’s good news for you:

Acute and chronic sports injuries are also treatable. You can get cured by following your doctor’s advice religiously and opting for modern sports injury rehabilitation procedures.

What are sports injuries?

There are many definitions of sports injuries. We can define sports injuries as the damage to the body tissues due to sports or exercise.

There are many treatment options for sports injuries but before heading to treatment, you should know the degree of your injury and the part that is injured.

Types of “injury classification” of sports injuries

Again, the classification of sports injuries can also be done considering different factors. The factors that are considered to classify sports injuries on acute and overuse (mentioned below) basis are:

  • Time is taken for the tissue to be injured
  • The type of tissue that’s damaged
  • The degree or severity of the damage caused by injury
  • Which injury the patient comes with

This is one of the most common ways to classify sports injuries as this classification allows the physiotherapist to understand the mechanism of injury and the site of its onset.

So let’s look into the classification for a better understanding of sports injuries.

Acute injuries

Acute injuries occur as a result of sudden damage to the tissue while sporting or exercising. This sudden damage causes symptoms of pain and inflammation immediately. The tissues that can be affected are tendons, miscues, ligaments, and bones.

An acute injury is caused when the applied force on the tissue is much more than the tissue’s strength to bear it. The injury can be further classified according to the force applied (direct or indirect force), the site of injury, and the type of injury.

Commonly occurring acute injuries include:

  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Clavicle fracture
  • Ankle sprain
  • Quadriceps strain

Direct force injury

Direct injury is caused by the force of the external object. It can be caused by a person or an object. For example, direct injury can be caused if a person collides with you or if an object like a hockey stick or a ball hits you during a sport.

Indirect force injury

These injuries are caused by intrinsic forces such as:

  • Overstretching during sporting
  • Muscle pull
  • The outstretched hand that can cause shoulder injury
  • Poor technique
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of fitness

Overuse injuries

Overuse injuries are caused due to repetitive movement of tissue. The tissue starts to damage because it doesn’t get enough time to absorb the force that’s applied in a repetitive motion.

The cause of overuse injury isn’t very obvious. One can’t predict what will cause an overuse injury but it can be prevented by taking enough rest after a sport that involves repetitive motion such as tennis.

Overuse injury begins to develop as soon as the tissue gets damaged on a microscopic level. Initially, the athlete wouldn’t know as there is no pain and inflammation. That’s why the athlete continues to perform that repetitive motion, damaging the tissue to the extent that it starts causing pain.

According to Physiopedia, “According to Clarsen (2015), overuse injuries are a problem in many sports with athletes exposed to high training loads, tight competition schedules and insufficient recovery thought to be particularly at risk; especially when participating in sports involving repetitive movements or impacts. For example, approximately two-thirds of athletes, who trained between 20 and 35 hours per week, sustained a performance-limiting overuse injury in athletics over one year. Similarly, between 29% and 44% of elite volleyball players, who often perform over 500 jumps per week, report symptoms of jumper’s knee.”

Commonly occurring overuse injuries include:

  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Ulnar neuropathy
  • Metatarsal stress

Treatment options of sport injuries

The treatment line of a sports injury solely depends on the individual’s condition, type of injury, and many other factors.

But common treatment options include:

Home remedies

As soon as you feel pain and experience injury, it is advised to take complete bed rest immediately. Not taking rest and continuing to use the injured tissue can result in chronic injury that takes months and years to heal. So rest is the first step to recovery.

You should observe RICE protocol as well that includes:

  • Rest
  • Icing—use of ice pack to reduce pain and swelling
  • Compression—use of compressors to reduce pain
  • Elevation—elevating the injured part to reduce swelling and easing the pain

Along with it, you can take over-the-counter pain medicines and topical creams to soothe the pain and encourage wound healing.

Medical help

Don’t ahh away from seeking medical help. If you’re an athlete then consult your doctor as soon as you get injured, even if the injury seems less painful.

The doctor will prescribe medicines like NSAIDs and corticosteroids, if needed. You will also be asked to carry out a few imaging tests to analyze the injury and get a proper prescription.

Your doctor might also refer you to a physiotherapist as well whery will ask you to carry out various exercises to ease the pain and enhance healing. Stick to your therapist’s exercises and don’t overdo them.

Laser pain therapy

A modern and effective therapy that helps reduce pain, inflammation, and encourages natural healing is through a low-level laser beam. The beam is directed on the injured part by an experienced doctor and one session might last up to half an hour. You will be asked for follow-up sessions until the injury gets healed completely.

In Pakistan, laser therapy is done to treat all 3 types of sports injuries at our modern pain management clinic—BioFlex Pakistan. We have experienced rheumatologists who have successfully treated many patients suffering from sports injuries.
