What is Osteoarthritis?

It is one of the most common kinds of arthritis that has affected millions of people around the globe and is the most common long lasting (chronic) joint condition. It is common to find osteoarthritis in elderly. It is a leading cause of “disability” these days.

The definition of osteoarthritis can be described as a joint disease that results from breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. The bones in contact with each other without the cartilage present at the joint then begin to deform over time due to friction, leading to pain and stiffness.

Osteoarthritis can develop on any joint of the body. Osteoarthritis affects the hands, feet, spine, and the large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. Management of osteoarthritis is possible with laser therapy, however the joint damage can never be restored.

There are 2 types of osteoarthritis, primary and secondary. Primary osteoarthritis is common, there is no known cause for it however there are associated risk factors. Causes of secondary osteoarthritis are due to another disease that leads to the joint degeneration, such as congenital disorder of joints, infection or severe injury.

Stages of Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee joint osteoarthritis is one of the most common type of osteoarthritis experienced.

Normal stage

This is the time when the knee does not show any sign and symptoms of osteoarthritis. In this stage there is no impairment and joint damage.

Minor stage

In this stage a person begins to develop bone spur around the knee joints, mild wear and joint tears begin. This stage is slightly painful.

Mild stage

At this level more bone spur is developed around the knee joints and also deformation rate increases gradually. Patients may experience joint pain and stiffness at this level.

Moderate stage

At this level a huge range of cartilage erosion occurs. And the gap between the bones slowly gradually becomes empty deforming the cartilage (connective tissue).

Severe stage

The end stage also referred to as the most severe stage of osteoarthritis. At this stage, joints become stiff and cartilage completely tears off leading to friction between the bones causing immense pain.

    Causes of Osteoarthritis

    There are various causes for osteoarthritis. Apart from being a congenital disorder of joints, factors such as obesity, injuries and overuse a common cause for osteoarthritis.

    Osteoarthritis symptoms
