KNEE PAIN?

The knee is a very complex joint and is one of the largest joint in the body. The knee comprises of many different structures including joint bones (fibula, femur, tibia), patella (the knee cap) ligaments, meniscus (cartilage) and tendons.

Knee pain may occur due to injury (ruptured ligament or torn cartilage) or overuse, causing stress on the knee joint as the joints in the body are susceptible to overuse and may cause pain. Medical conditions such as arthritis (and arthritis related conditions – gout, osteoarthritis) are known to commonly affect the knee joint.

TYPES OF KNEE PAIN

The knee pain might present itself laterally, medially, from the front or from the back, it may affect one or both of the knees. Back of knee pain is commonly caused due to a Baker’s Cyst. Pain in the front of the knee may be due to a few conditions such as; breakdown of cartilage tissue due to softening (chondromalacia) or runner’s knee (patellar tendinitis).

Discussed below are lateral and medial knee pain and their causes.

Lateral knee pain is felt towards the outer side of the knee and is caused due to lateral cartilage injuries (of the lateral collateral ligament – LCL). The main reason behind LCL injury is an abrupt smash or blow to the inside of the knee due to a sudden twist.

Lateral meniscus tear is a type of lateral knee injury. The reason behind lateral meniscus tear is a rapid twist of the knee, but it can also occur as a result of natural aging. It causes instability and swelling of the knee structure.

Medial knee pain is felt towards the inside of the knee. Medial collateral ligament strain is the main cause of inner knee pain. The purpose of this ligament is to stabilize the knee from the inside. It mainly occurs when there is some sort of trauma to the outside of knee.

Medial meniscus tears can also be ruptured from the upper mentioned causes. The symptoms of the medial meniscus tear are also similar to that of medial collateral ligament strain.

    Knee joint pain reasons

Causes of knee pain may be directly due to knee injury, however the condition may stem from underlying pain in other locations such as your hip or foot, to compensate for this you might change the way you talk – which may result in knee pain.

Below are the common causes for knee pain.

    • ACL injury (tear of the anterior cruciate ligament)
    • Fractures (kneecap breakdown)
    • Torn meniscus (sudden twist while bearing weight)
    • Knee bursitis (inflammation in the bursae)
    • Loose body (degeneration of the bone)
    • Iliotibial band syndrome (tough band becomes tight)

    SYMPTOMS

The intensity of the knee pain may vary from acute to severe depending upon the intricacy of the condition.

Signs and symptoms that are usually accompanied by knee pain are as follows:

    • Swelling & rigidity
    • Redness and warmth to touch
    • Vulnerability & instability
    • Audible Popping & crunching noises
    • Failure to fully straighten the knee
    • Abnormal sounds when moving the knee

    Knee Pain Treatment

Laser therapy has been widely researched and has been shown in literature to have immediate knee pain relief as well as medium and long-term pain relief.

Laser therapy has been shown to increase cellular metabolism of the patient, which promotes the healing process of the targeted area. Laser therapy has also been shown to interact with the nerves of the targeted site in a way which reduces pain experienced. This interaction also releases endorphins which reduces the painful sensations at the site. These interactions have a combined effect that result in pain relief starting from minutes after the first treatment to long-term pain relief.
