What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder of the central nervous system in which the brain begins to act abnormally, resulting in the patient experiencing an epilepsy attack – also known as a seizure – which causes unusual behaviour and may also cause unawareness. Unusual behaviour involves repetitive twitching of arms or legs, unawareness in this case means briefly staring blankly into nothing with no thoughts. These seizures typically last for a few seconds up to 2 minutes.

The main cause of epilepsy is currently unknown, however factors such as brain injury and family history may play a role. Any and all individuals can be a susceptible to epilepsy, including children. Epilepsy in children is the most common childhood brain disorder, however by the time they are teenagers: majority of them outgrow their seizures. Over 60 million people world-wide are currently diagnosed with epilepsy.

Diagnosis of epilepsy is done following at least two unprovoked seizures.

There is no permanent treatment for epilepsy or epilepsy cure, however there are several methods for management of epilepsy.

Types of Epilepsy

Following are the 2 types of epilepsy:

Generalized Epilepsy

This form of epilepsy distorts brain activity on both sides/majority of the brain. Generalized epilepsy can be further divided into generalized motor epilepsy and generalized non-motor epilepsy. Generalized motor epilepsy causes uncontrolled motion in the body, such as twitching of the arms or legs, and may also involve random eye movement. Generalized non-motor epilepsy causes patients to blank out and stare into nothing, these can frequently go unnoticed as they are very short.

Focal Epilepsy

This effects one half of the brain, and a patient may experience partial seizures. Focal epilepsy can be further categorised into 2 categories. The first is focal aware seizures: where you are fully aware of your surroundings (even if you are paralysed). The second is focal impaired awareness seizures: if you are aware of your surroundings during the seizure. Patients may stare blankly at nothing, or suffer from uncontrolled movements of their limbs and eyes.

    Epilepsy Causes

The main cause epilepsy is still not known, however the following causes may lead to the development of epilepsy:

    • Genetic influence
    • Head trauma
    • Brain conditions

    • Poor nutrition
    • Oxygen deficiencies
    • Developmental disorders

    Epilepsy Symptoms

    • Psychic issues

    Epilepsy Treatment in Pakistan

Laser therapy has shown to be an effective epilepsy disease treatment. Laser treatment for epilepsy has shown to prevent chemically or electrically-induced seizures, this was accomplished through the high-level stimulation of the vagus nerve – which extends from the brainstem, down to the abdomen through the neck and the thorax region. This high-level stimulation also reduced the duration of seizures that were in progress.

Laser therapy has been shown to increase cellular metabolism of the patient, which promotes the healing process of the targeted area. Laser therapy has also been shown to interact with the nerves of the targeted site in a way that reduces the pain experienced. This interaction also releases endorphins which reduces the painful sensations at the site. These interactions have a combined effect that results in pain relief starting from minutes after the first treatment to long-term pain relief.
