Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a medical disorder that leads to memory problems, thinking issues and behaviour abnormalities, these conditions are generally collectively termed as dementia.

Abnormalities and many complex changes in the brain are a common cause of Alzheimer’s, this initially appears in the hippocampus of the brain, the region responsible for creating memories. As the neurons in this region die, the brain is progressively affected, and towards the end stages of Alzheimer’s, the brain will have shrunk. In initial stages, there are no prominent symptoms but these often progress with the passage of the time as damage becomes more wide-spread.

It is a known fact that people of old age – typically over 65 – are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. However many under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s.

There is currently no Alzheimer’s cure, treatments revolve more around the prevention of further onset of the disease, and to slow down progression of neuron degeneration. Read until the end to find out more about Alzheimer’s disease prevention and treatment, and how BioFlex treats it.

Types of Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s starts as a forgetful conversation and may result in complete memory loss with the passage of time. Following are the few types of Alzheimer’s Disease:

Mild Cognitive Impairment

Related to forgetting daily routine activities such as bill payments etc, this disease causes patients to take longer completing small tasks.

Lewy Bodies with Dementia

This is due to the abnormal accumulation of a protein in the brain structure, these protein deposits are called as Lewy bodies.

Vascular Dementia

It relates to the issues of reasoning and memory issues and results in impaired flow of blood to the brain.

Frontotemporal Dementia

An umbrella name given for the grouping of several brain disorders that mainly affect the frontal temporal portions of the brain.

    Alzheimer’s Disease Causes

The exact reason behind Alzheimer’s disease is not known, but it is known that Alzheimer’s disease is caused by abnormality in brain functioning (mainly the roles of 2 proteins in the brain; beta-amyloid & tau proteins) which can lead to neuron disturbances, causing gradual brain death. Several risk factors also influence Alzheimer’s:

    • Age
    • Genetic combination
    • Lifestyle
    • Environmental triggers
    • Brain proteins failure
    • Toxic events
    • Damage to memory portion of brain
    • Neurons spread loss

    Alzheimer’s Disease Symptoms

Each and every person usually faces memory lapses, but the loss of memory that occurs due to Alzheimer’s disease is highly noticeable. It affects the ability of a person to function normally on everyday tasks. Some detailed signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s are as followed:

    • Memory loss
    • Forgetting recent events
    • Memory impairments
    • Difficulty in remembering things & people
    • Repeating statements

    Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

Alzheimer’s treatment research is still currently ongoing, current prevention methods and initial treatment of Alzheimer’s disease include medication and altering daily routines to create a suitable environment for the patient. Laser therapy is a relatively new Alzheimer’s treatment that is still currently undergoing research, however it has shown to significantly reduce a variety of symptoms without any side effects.

Laser therapy has showed in research to have a significant improvement of symptoms during the first few weeks of treatment. Patients undergoing laser therapy showed a variety of improvements in the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s, this was confirmed by the care takers of the patients – as well as tests that were run. A wide variety of improvements were noticed, these included; improvement of function abilities and sleep, and less anger outburst, anxiety and wandering. These improvements (stated by both the patient and the caretaker) increased the quality of life for both; the Alzheimer’s patients and the caretakers, and were not subject to any side effects post treatments.

Laser therapy has been shown to increase cellular metabolism of the patient, which promotes the healing process of the targeted area. Laser therapy has also been shown to interact with the nerves of the targeted site in a way which reduces pain experienced. This interaction also releases endorphins which reduces the painful sensations at the site. These interactions have a combined effect that result in pain relief starting from minutes after the first treatment to long-term pain relief.

Our technology is equipped with providing pain relief and management of many complex medical disorders – including many neurological disorders. The treatments are non-invasive, the procedure is painless and you do not experience any side effects.
