Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are the injuries of soft tissues, these are responsible for connecting, supporting and surrounding a variety of structures in the body – including the organs. Soft tissues include the muscles, tendons and ligaments etc. Tendons perform the task of connecting bone and muscle together, ligaments are responsible for the joining of bones to bones, and muscle’s primary function is to create movement – and hence force. Soft tissue recovery requires a prolonged time duration for complete healing.

A soft tissue injury is common in sports and are associated with overuse or improper use of the muscles and tendons. They mainly occur as a result of an uncontrolled movement, repetitive movement or a sudden ankle rollover. They require approximately 1-8 weeks to be healed completely (depending on factors such as age and the condition), this can prevent routinely physical activity.

Sports injuries can be prevented from occurring the first place, this can be done by giving emphasis to preparation time before physical activity – such as warming up correctly. Dynamic stretches before physical activity and static stretching after physical activity have both been shown to reduce the risk of a soft tissue injury.

Sports injury treatment and rehabilitation for acute sports injuries commonly involve using the following technique; PRICE therapy (protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation). Chronic sports injuries are treated using physiotherapy, and may require corticosteroid injections for severe or reoccurring conditions. Corrective surgery is rarely required for sports injuries – however severely broken bones are treated using surgery. Pain relief is often provided using over the counter medication. LLLT has been in use for sports injury management since years, as it provides quick healing and pain relief without the need for medication or invasive procedures – allowing the athlete or individual to get right back into whatever physical activity they were doing previously.

Common Sports Injuries

ports and soft tissue injuries are damage of muscles, tendons and ligaments. A list of sports injuries are given below:

Muscle Strain

muscle strain is the result of the overstretching of muscles. Improper use of the muscle or fatigue can also lead to a muscle strain. They can happen anywhere in the muscular system, but the most suspectable areas for muscle strain are in the lower back and in the muscles of the legs (hamstrings, quadriceps and calves).

Achilles Tendon Strain

Achilles tendon strain is caused by repetitive strain or intense strain on the Achilles tendon. Achilles tendon is a muscle that performs the function of joining calf muscles to the bone of the heel. The Achilles tendon is responsible for carrying out some very important functions such as walking, running and jumping etc.

Tendons and Ligaments

Ligament and tendon tears occur from the ripping or tearing of the fibrous type of connective tissues, both can occur from similar activities, injury might occur due to overstretched or torn muscles. They require a number of months to heal.

Hematoma

Hematoma is when a solid swollen blood clot forms within the tissue. They can become large enough to gather a significant amount of blood – resulting in low blood pressure. Organ disfunction may occur if numerous large hematomas are left untreated.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Laser therapy is often used world-wide to provide sports injury rehabilitation – mainly in athletes – to get them back into the field as soon as possible. Laser therapy provides boosted healing of the targeted area, allowing for a faster recovery time. Alongside a healing rate boost, it also provides pain relief. It has been shown to be beneficial for various sports injuries, however it provides great benefit for specific common sports injuries, such as Jumper’s knee, tennis elbow and Achilles tendinitis.

Laser therapy helps provide pain relief and accelerated healing rate for a list of sports injuries. Low Light Laser Therapy (LLLT) has shown to be effective in the treatment of sports injuries, and is very effective for common sports injuries such as Jumper’s knee, tennis elbow and Achilles tendinitis.

Laser therapy has been shown to increase cellular metabolism of the patient, which promotes the healing process of the targeted area. Laser therapy has also been shown to interact with the nerves of the targeted site in a way which reduces pain experienced. This interaction also releases endorphins which reduces the painful sensations at the site. These interactions have a combined effect that result in pain relief starting from minutes after the first treatment to long-term pain relief.
