What are Diabetic Wounds?

Diabetic patients have negative effects on their ability to wound heal, even a minor scar or mild burn can cause adverse changes in their lives. The diabetic wound is a term that refers to the wounds of a diabetic patient, which if not given proper attention develops into a harmful infection.

An infection can transmit to the tissue & bone near the wound or to the inaccessible areas of the body. If emergency care is not provided, a mild infection may lead to a fatal or life-threatening disease.

Causes of delayed wound healing in diabetic patients are due to their high sugar levels, which must be controlled in order to minimize the risk of developing slow healing diseases such as foot ulcers. Diabetes and its effects on wound healing can be summarized due to; peripheral arterial disease and peripheral neuropathy.

Types of Diabetic Wound

A small cut or minor burn should be treated immediately, especially if the affected person is a diabetic patient. 

The three most common types of diabetic wounds are as follows:

Venous Ulcers

They are wounds that occur below the knee, mainly on the inner side of the leg, just on the top of the ankle. They may spread to the other leg if one is affected. They are common in people who had previously experienced leg swelling, or blood clotting in superficial or deep veins.

Diabetic Ulcers

They usually occur on the parts that have higher pressure points on the bottom side of the feet. The wound might have a pink or brown color depending upon the circulation of the patient. Diabetic patients are at high risk of developing such ulcers.

Arterial Ulcers

They primarily occur on the heels or tips of toes. They might develop in the middle of the toes where both toes rub with each other. They usually have a yellowish color and do not often bleed. A person with poor blood flow in the leg region can easily develop arterial ulcers.
