What are Diabetic Wounds?

Diabetic patients have negative effects on their ability to wound heal, even a minor scar or mild burn can cause adverse changes in their lives. The diabetic wound is a term that refers to the wounds of a diabetic patient, which if not given proper attention develops into a harmful infection.

An infection can transmit to the tissue & bone near the wound or to the inaccessible areas of the body. If emergency care is not provided, a mild infection may lead to a fatal or life-threatening disease.

Causes of delayed wound healing in diabetic patients are due to their high sugar levels, which must be controlled in order to minimize the risk of developing slow healing diseases such as foot ulcers. Diabetes and its effects on wound healing can be summarized due to; peripheral arterial disease and peripheral neuropathy.

Types of Diabetic Wound

A small cut or minor burn should be treated immediately, especially if the affected person is a diabetic patient.

The three most common types of diabetic wounds are as follows:

Venous Ulcers

They are wounds that occur below the knee, mainly on the inner side of the leg, just on the top of the ankle. They may spread to the other leg if one is affected. They are common in people who had previously experienced leg swelling, or blood clotting in superficial or deep veins.

Diabetic Ulcers

They usually occur on the parts that have higher pressure points on the bottom side of the feet. The wound might have a pink or brown color depending upon the circulation of the patient. Diabetic patients are at high risk of developing such ulcers.

Arterial Ulcers

They primarily occur on the heels or tips of toes. They might develop in the middle of the toes where both toes rub with each other. They usually have a yellowish color and do not often bleed. A person with poor blood flow in the leg region can easily develop arterial ulcers.

    Diabetic Wound Causes

The prime concern with diabetic infections are poor and delayed healing due to elevated sugar levels. The causes of Diabetic wounds are mentioned ahead:

    • High sugar levels in the blood
    • Poor Circulation
    • Nerve damage
    • Immune system Issues
    • Infection
    • Irritated feet
    • Wounded feet

    Diabetic Wound Symptoms

High levels of glucose for prolonged periods of time disturb the normal functioning of the immune system. Therefore in the case of a diabetic patient, a small wound may turn into an infection. Diabetic wounds of any type may present with the following signs and symptoms:

    • Chronic pain
    • Pain & functional loss
    • Inflammation
    • Infectious patches
    • Pus Drainage
    • Can be completely painless
    • Bad odor wounds
    • Dead tissues
    • Nerve damage

    Diabetes Wound Healing Treatment

There are several diabetic foot ulcer treatment guidelines, such as utilising appropriate therapeutic footwear and applying dressings to provide moisture to the wound. Over the counter treatment is also available, however laser therapy has shown to be a cost effective and efficient diabetic foot ulcer treatment.

Laser therapy has been widely researched and has been shown to achieve good results in literature. Recovery for diabetic foot ulcers was seen only after a few days following laser therapy. The foot ulcer showed to heal completely in a few of the patients, whereas other patients showed significant signs of healing. Reduction of the area of the ulcer was also obtained.

Laser therapy has been shown to increase cellular metabolism of the patient, which promotes the healing process of the targeted area. Laser therapy has also been shown to interact with the nerves of the targeted site in a way which reduces pain experienced. This interaction also releases endorphins which reduces the painful sensations at the site. These interactions have a combined effect that result in pain relief starting from minutes after the treatment to long-term pain relief.

Our technology is equipped with providing pain relief and healing for many complex medical disorders. The treatments are non-invasive, the procedure is painless and you do not experience any side effects.
