How Successfully BioFlex Laser Technology Treats Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Laser therapy is one of the most popular therapeutic tools to treat various medical conditions. It helps in treating acute or chronic pain and treats degenerated tissues or joints. The risk factors associated with carpal tunnel syndrome include the following hereditary, repetitive usage of hands in the same posture, position of the hand and wrist, pregnancy, medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, hormonal disorders, and others.

The symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome include a tingling sensation, pain, numbness in hand, burning sensation, and occasional shock type of sensation which radiates towards the hand. You feel clumsiness and weakness in the hand which makes it difficult for you to accomplish fine movements. You start dropping things due to numbness, weakness and proprioception loss.


Carpal tunnel syndrome is identified with the clinical diagnosis and physical examination. The tests performed to evaluate carpal tunnel syndrome include ultrasound, X-rays, MRI, electrophysiological tests and others.

The standard treatment option for carpal tunnel syndrome is an open carpal tunnel release. There are various treatment options for relieving carpal tunnel syndrome, one of which includes surgical therapy which poses risk factors to the patient. It is time-consuming, expensive and ineffective. The rehabilitation program is also a part of therapy for patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome which includes patient’s education regarding postures. Other conservative treatment options include local corticosteroid injections, ultrasound therapy, splints, and lasers. Lasers are one of the latest treatment modalities which is also effective for treating Carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a non-surgical procedure that poses no side effects over an individual. This easy, painless procedure is beneficial for treating carpal tunnel syndrome which repairs the inflamed tissues.


According to a study conducted in 2007 over the group of 81 patients where the randomized controlled trial was performed. LLT was used to investigate the efficacy of this tool over the patients suffering from Carpal tunnel syndrome. The patients were divided into two groups, with one group receiving placebo and while other groups receiving the laser treatment for around 5 times a week with a total of around 10 sessions. Wrist splint was also assigned to each patient. The assessment was done depending on hand-pinch grip strength, functional capacity, and VAS for assessing pain. Once the study was done, it concluded that significant improvement was seen in patients while the assessment was done using all the three tests. Low-level laser therapy proves to be an effective measure for treating carpal tunnel syndrome when they are in an early, mild or moderate stage when painful sensation is the leading symptom. Surgical treatment option can be reserved for cases which are advanced or chronic. 

According to the study conducted in December 2016, 22 clinical trials were assessed to identify the benefit and safety of LLT in comparison to placebo or other non-surgical treatment options like fascial manipulation, application over the affected site by pulsed magnetic field, steroid injections, wrist splint application combined with NSAIDs, TENS i.e. transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, tendon gliding exercises along with others.


BioFlex laser therapy is a type of cold laser which results in photobiomodulation and is also known as low-intensity laser therapy. This laser therapy utilizes low-intensity laser diode which emits light over the affected site. This, in turn, results in the elimination of pain, reduces inflammation, accelerates the healing process, enhances angiogenesis and promotes the growth of new cells. Laser parameters should be carefully assessed when evaluating the efficacy of the lasers over the affected site.  These parameters include irradiation area, laser power over the action point, time duration, time interval, power density and optical power of lasers over the targeted area.
