Treadmill Knee Pain – Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Treadmill Knee Pain – Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

In extreme weather, it seems impossible to get up and go for a workout outside. Then you might feel like hitting the gym and running on a treadmill to compensate for your physical fitness.

Running on a treadmill is great only if you know how to reduce the impact of powerful strides. Because if you just run casually on a treadmill; after a few days you might experience bad knee pain.

If you have been using a treadmill for a few weeks and are experiencing knee pain then read below. You will get to know about the causes of knee pain when running on a treadmill and how to get proper treatment for it.

What causes knee pain when you run on the treadmill?

Running on a treadmill is different from running on a track outside. When you are running on a track or ground the force applied by your toes is also absorbed by the ground and you don’t feel much impact on your lower body part.

But when you run on a treadmill the surface of the treadmill does not absorb this pressure and so the pressure is taken by your lower body part, especially your knees.

Although the first bone that faces the pressure with each stride is your ankle, your knees are affected the most because they are positioned in the middle of your ankle and hips and absorb most of the pressure to maintain balance.

So when you run on a treadmill in a “wrong” way, your knees will absorb tons of pressure and finally get exhausted and painful. This knee pain caused by treadmills might last for days and weeks.

If you ignore this knee pain and continue to run on the treadmill then it can eventually damage the knee muscles and joints as well, resulting in chronic knee pain.

How to get rid of treadmill knee pain?

If the knee pain persists even if you avoid running on the treadmill then you need proper treatment. You can follow a few proven home remedies to cure knee pain naturally or use over-the-counter medicines.

Home remedies

  • Avoid running on your treadmill and take lots of rest
  • Apply hot and cold packs alternatively to get rid of pain and swelling (if any)
  • Don’t bend and stretch your knees much to reduce the damage
  • Take over-the-counter medicines or apply pain-relieving ointment

Medications

If your knee pain isn’t going away with home remedies then consult your doctor for proper treatment. Your doctor might suggest NSAIDs to treat knee pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is a great idea to reduce pain and relieve the added pressure on your knees. But practising knee pain exercises on your own isn’t a good idea. You should consult a physical therapist who will advise a set of exercises for your particular condition.

Laser pain therapy

If you don’t want to take pills but want to get better soon from an alternative treatment then try laser pain therapy. This modern therapy is promising with great results and zero side effects.

Laser therapy is practised around the world to treat various neuromuscular conditions, without using invasive procedures. You just need a few sessions of laser therapy to get rid of treadmill knee pain effectively.

How to avoid knee pain when running on a treadmill?

Keep your posture right

Running on a treadmill by stretching or needing your body too much can be harmful. Make sure to move your pelvis sideways with each stride (as you naturally would while running on the ground).

Wear comfortable shoes

Wear shoes that are designed for running and are able to absorb maximum pressure. Worn out shoes can also cause knee pain, and it can really affect your knees in the long run.

Watch for incline

A 2% incline on the treadmill is great to mimic the natural ground. With a completely flat treadmill, you’ll add tons of pressure to your lower body.

Warm-up

Start with walking so that your body gets used to the treadmill. Once you get the hang of it, start with running.

Listen to your body

If you feel your knees are hurting or your body is absorbing too much force then stop. Don’t make your body do the workout if it’s not ready for it.

Conclusion

Running on a treadmill is a good idea when you can’t go out. But you should be careful about your posture to minimize the pressure on your knees that develop immensely with each stride.

Read above if you are experiencing knee pain while running on your treadmill and know the causes, treatment, and prevention options to be physically fit again.
