Knee Ligament Tear Treatment

Read below to find out different options for knee ligament tear treatments, but for now, let’s have a look at what ligaments and which ligaments are mostly injured during daily activities.

We all experience ligament injuries at least once in a life. These injuries affect our daily routine and limit our range of motion. If the torn ligaments in the knee are not treated properly, they tend to come back.

It is therefore essential to get yourself properly treated for ligament tears.

What is ligament tear in the knee?

Ligaments are defined as the tough tissue bands which form a connection between the bones of our body.

Types of knee ligaments that get injured

The four essential ligaments of our knee which are at increased risk of injury include the following:

Anterior and posterior cruciate ligament – the anterior cruciate ligament is the one that commonly gets injured in knee injuries. This ligament connects the shin bone to the thigh bone. A posterior cruciate ligament connects the thigh bone and shin bone to the knee. This ligament is rarely injured but does get involved in car accidents.

Lateral and medial collateral ligament – the lateral collateral ligament connects fibula with thigh bone over the outer part of the knee while the medial collateral ligament connects thigh bone and shin bone over the inner part of the knee.

Knee ligament tear symptoms

The signs and symptoms of torn ligament within the knee include the following:

·         Severe and sudden painful sensation

·         Snap or loud popping sound during the injury

·         Unable to put pressure or weight over the joint without any pain

·         Looseness within the joint

Diagnosis

The doctor performs the physical examination to evaluate the torn ligament injury in the knee. If the knee feels swollen or tense with blood then the doctors might drain the swelling with a needle. X-rays are also advised to confirm the diagnosis of whether there is any broken bone or not. MRI is also performed to check the ligament injuries.

Knee ligament tear treatment options

The mode of treatment for torn ligament injury varies depending on the severity.

Ligament tear in knee – home remedy

If an individual experiences mild to moderate injury then it might heal with home remedies. The treatment options for such injuries include:

Medication

Anti-inflammatory medications i.e. NSAIDs like naproxen, ibuprofen, or aspirin help in easing the pain and swelling. Other medications include knee injections, corticosteroids, and hyaluronic acid.

Arthrocentesis- a procedure where the fluid is removed from the joint with the help of a needle.

Physiotherapy for ligament tear of knee

Physical therapy that involves strengthening and stretching exercises can also help to improve the injury if recommended by the doctor as excessive stretching might hurt you.

Surgery

If the injury of torn ligaments is severe then you might need a surgical procedure.

For collateral ligament tears, surgery is usually not required. But if cruciate ligaments are stretched or torn then you need reconstructive knee surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon takes the tendons from different parts of the patient’s leg and replaces the torn outer ligament of the knee. This reconstruction surgical procedure is a complicated one with side effects as well. This procedure is only advised for people who have severe ligament injury and instability or athletes who prefer regaining their range of motion.

Knee ligament tear treatment with laser therapy

Another latest technology for knee pain treatment and soft tissue injury includes low-level laser therapy.

The laser therapy penetrates the skin tissue resulting in improved circulation, enhanced the health of the body cells, increased the release of endorphins which helps the body to fight against pain and inflammation. This healing process promotes the formation of healthy tissue which relieves the painful sensation of the torn ligament injury.

Laser therapy makes use of infrared and red light that aids in relieving pain. The laser is applied over the skin which results in penetration of photons within the mitochondria of the skin cells. The energy is then produced by the cells which result in positive physiological reactions that help in restoring the normal cell functions and morphology.

The use of lasers has the following beneficial effects over the knee pain after torn ligament injury:

Ø  enhanced healing and repair of the knee tissues

Ø  enhanced tissue strength

Ø  reduced pain, inflammation, and swelling

Ø  rapid healing with shorter recovery time

Ø  the non-invasive procedure with no post-op complications

Ø  enhances the nerve function
