Difference between migraine and cluster headaches

Cluster headache is a severe form of headache that affects one side of the head and around the eye area (just like migraine) but is much worse. Also, cluster headaches don’t last as long as migraines.

Cluster headache is rare and affects every one individual out of 1000.

Difference between migraine and tension headache

Tension headache results in a circumferential, squeezing effect over the patient’s head. It occurs due to the muscle contraction located between the neck and head. The tension headache results in mild to moderate pain. It lasts for a few days in severe conditions while usually, it lasts for 30 minutes to a few hours.

Migraine on the other hand results in moderate to severe type of throbbing pain at the sides or front of the head. The migraine pain consistently occurs over a few days along with other symptoms known as an aura.

Initial symptoms of migraine and tension headache

Tension headache does not result in prior symptoms. Migraine results in auras or warning signs.

The aura symptoms include psychological, visual, physiological, and auditory. It occurs due to the neurological effects of the brain. The patient is unable to perceive objects visually resulting in sparkles, stars, coloured spots, flashing or dark lights, and jagged lines. Visual symptoms are also accompanied by light sensitivity.

The migraine patient also experiences hearing and speech disturbances.

The patient also suffers from mood swings, thirst, hunger, tiredness, confusion, memory changes, and others.

Migraine also results in physiological symptoms like weakness, vertigo, tingling sensation, increased urination, fainting, and others.

Symptoms of migraine and tension headache during the bout

During tension headaches, the patient does not suffer from associated signs and symptoms. However, during migraines, patients have head pain. He is unable to perform daily activities. He or she might feel fatigued and may need rest. Migraine patients suffer from aura signs and symptoms.

Triggering factors of migraine and tension headaches

Tension headaches occur due to stress, depression, anxiety, poor posture, tiredness, and others. Migraine, on the other hand, occurs due to chemical reactions within the brain or hormonal changes within the body.
